Mastering FAQ
What is mastering?
Mastering is the final stage that prepares your song for release. Your stereo mix is carefully processed using tools like EQ, compression, limiting, saturation, stereo enhancement, and other techniques to create a cohesive, polished sound. The result is a balanced, powerful master that translates consistently across streaming platforms, speakers, headphones, and other playback systems.
What is stem mastering?
Stem mastering involves summing multiple stems together and mastering them over the master bus. The benefit is that the engineer has the ability to control, process, and balance each individual stem that is being summed allowing for a better end result.
What is Apple Digital mastering?
By adding Apple Digital Master to your order, you will receive the stereo master along with a Hi-Res 96khz Apple Digital Master file. The release on apple music will also have the Hi-Res lossless label. Keep in mind that your distributor must accept 96khz 24bit files in order for the release to be compatible. If you use Distrokid, make sure to opt your account into the Apple Digital Masters program. It's free!
When do I pay for mastering?
Orders and payment must be made before work begins. This ensures the engineer take the appropriate amount of time to deliver the master back to you.
How many revisions can I make?
Each master includes 2 revisions so you can be confident the final result sounds exactly how you want it. If additional revisions are needed they can be purchased as additional revisions for $10. This charge covers the engineers time to recall the mastering chain and re-print the mix.
Should I leave my mastering plugins active?
It is recommended to remove any plugins that will affect dynamic range. This includes compressions and limiting. The reason this is suggested is because it allows us to compress and limit at the correct stage of the mastering chain and allows for more flexibility.
